  • Description:

The Sciaenochromis fryeri or Electric Blue Ahli Cichlid is a popular, brilliant blue Haplochromis from Lake Malawi, native to the waters around Maleri Island. Males of this species develop a brilliant "electric" blue color which covers their face, body and down to the tail fin. They have red color on the anal and pelvic fins, and also feature a blaze which runs along the top of their head, dorsal fin, and tail fin. Males can get to be about 7" in length and females are usually slightly smaller.

  • Compatibility:

Electric Blue Ahli are mildly aggressive African cichlids. They are best kept with other Haplochromis of a similar size and temperament. Males will show increased levels of aggression towards other males and when breeding, so it is best to have only one male even when not breeding these fish. Some compatible cichlid species are other Haps like the Venustus, the Intermedius and the Blue Dolphin cichlid.

  • Tank Requirements and Feeding:

Sciaenochromis fryeri are native to the hard alkaline waters of Lake Malawi in Africa. Ideal water conditions for a home aquarium should mimic the conditions in the natural habitat for these fish to display their best colors. The water temperature should be between 78 - 82°F with a pH between 7.8 - 8.6. Additives like Cichlid Lake Salt and Malawi/Victoria Buffer will condition the aquarium water for African cichlids. The aquarium substrate should be sand or fine gravel, and there should be several rocks and caves for these fish to claim territories and seek protection.

Electric Blue Ahli cichlids are carnivores and should be fed a diet which includes a variety of foods that contain a good amount of protein. Commercially prepared cichlid pellets mixed with plankton based flakes and live (or frozen) brine shrimp or blood worms, are good choices for their diet. Such foods will help these fish display their bright electric blue color.

  • Breeding:

Electric Blue Ahli are sexually dimorphic. Males will display the bright electric blue color, while females remain dull grey. Males will also get larger than females.

Like most Lake Malawi cichlids, the Sciaenochromis fryeri is a maternal mouthbrooder. While they are spawning, a female will circle around, pick up and hold the eggs in her mouth to protect them. Females may continue to carry the eggs and fry in their mouth for two weeks or longer. It is a good idea to keep several females with one male when breeding. This will help spread out any aggression displayed by the male.

A popular hybrid of the Electric Blue Ahli that has been gaining interest in the hobby is the OB Ahli. It is a cross between an OB Peacock and an Electric Blue Ahli. The cross has produced several various color patterns which are all unique and quite stunning.
