  • Description:

This is a very popular color variant of the Aulonocara sp. "Stuartgranti Maleri" (Chipoka). The German Red Peacock cichlid is not native to the waters of Lake Malawi, neither is it a hybrid like the OB Peacock cichlid. The German Red peacock has been line breed in Germany to get it's red color. This highly popular species features a bright red body with a dazzling metallic blue color on the lower portion of its face. The Aulonocara Rubescens or Ruby Red Peacock is another variant of this cichlid which was line bred from the Aulonocara sp. "Stuartgranti Maleri" (Marleri Is.) which may develop a slightly darker red color.

  • Compatibility:

The Aulonocara sp. "German Red" is very similar to the Sunshine Peacock in disposition. Though these fish are typically peaceful, a dominant male can show increased levels of aggression towards other Aulonocara species. A breeding male will also show increased levels of aggression towards tankmates. Some compatible fish are the Lemon Jake Peacock, the Red Shoulder Peacock, and the Blue Neon Peacock.

  • Tank Requirements and Feeding:

Though German Red Peacocks are not native to the hard alkaline waters of Lake Malawi in Africa. A home aquarium should mimic the same environment that Aulonocara species are used to. The substrate iconshould be sand or fine gravel and there should be plenty of rocks to create caves and passageways for the fish to claim territories or seek protection. The water temperature should be between 78 - 82°F with a pH between 7.8 - 8.6. Additives like Cichlid Lake Salt and Malawi/Victoria Buffer will condition the aquarium water for African cichlids.

German Red Peacock cichlids are carnivores and should be fed a variety of foods that contain a good amount of protein. Plankton based flakes mixed with commercially prepared cichlid pellets iconand live (or frozen) blood worms iconor brine shrimp, are good choices for their diet. Such foods will help bring out the bright red and blue colors in these fish.

  • Breeding:

The German Red Peacock cichlid is sexually dimorphic, which means that the males display bright colors and the females remain a dull grey/brown color. The male German Red Peacock develops a bright red color as it matures, which covers most of it's body. It also develops a metallic blue color on the lower half of its face. Females maintain the dull grey/brown color and show a little hint of red on their belly and dorsal fin.

Like all Aulonocara, the German Red Peacock cichlid is a mouthbrooder. While spawning, the female will pick up and hold the eggs in her mouth to protect them. It is a good idea to keep several females with one male when breeding. This will help spread out any aggression displayed by the male.

All Aulonocara species will hybridize. If you want to avoid hybridization, it is best to either, only keep males, or only keep one species of Aulonocara.
